I had this idea where I’d try and highlight recipes that have caught my eye over the week and “Recipe Round-Up” was born. The original idea was to post this on Fridays, but I wasn’t able to get to it yesterday. Bringing this all together has been a larger task than I expected, but I’ve learned a bunch along the way.
I don’t intend on having a theme every week, but this week it turned out that I happen to be in need of some apple recipes so here we are. In case you haven’t noticed, I don’t have a huge baking budget so I’m always on the lookout for cheap supplies and ingredients. For the last couple of months apple prices have been INSANE and I haven’t been able to come up with a reason why I really need apples to justify the expense. Thankfully this apple drought has been broken and I’ve seen apples on sale all over the place. So much so that by the end of the week I noticed that I have about fifteen pounds of apples in the house. I got carried away, what can I say.
So here I am, up to my ears in apples … what’s a baker to do? You know those instinctual equations that pop into my mind when I think of certain ingredients, well all I’ve been able to think of is pie. While the pie I normally make (oh yeah, it’s THAT pie that started it all for me) does require a virtual mountain of apples, I still have more than I know what to do with. Thank God for the Internet! I’ve scoured the web for recipes that have been posted in the last week. I realize that there are probably even more great ideas for things you can do with apples out there, but the whole premise for Recipe Round-Ups is that the posts must be from the last week. Without further ado:
Apple Frangipane Tartelettes With Cheesecake Ice Cream from Tartlette
Mashed apples and vanilla cake from Flagrante Delícia
Baked Apples from A Smart Mouth
Roasted Apple and Vanilla Bean Soufflé from Cannelle Et Vanille
Dulce de leche Apple Cake with Browned Butter Icing from Sweet Cakes
Apple & Cheddar Crepes from Omnomicon
Old Fashioned Apple Butter from Delightful Delicacies
Apple Hand Pies from Brown Eyed Baker
Brown Sugar and Vanilla Bean Apple Sauce from Hot Off The Garlic Press
Pumpkin Shortcakes with Apple Compote and Vanilla Honey Ice Cream from Dishing Up Delights
Apple & Cajeta (Rich Mexican Caramel) Crisp from Zoë Bakes
Apple Tart Bread from The Knead For Bread
Mini Apple Breakfast Cookies from Open Source Food
Apple Fritters from Joe Pastry (the actual fritter batter recipe is here)
Apple Muffins (of all kinds ) from Thursday Night Smackdown
Now if recipes weren’t enough for you, I also came across a couple of other recipe-less posts on apples. Apparently I’m not the only one with apples on the brain or in the kitchen. Joe Pastry besides having a recipe for apple fritters has had a plethora of apple related posts all week long, from chronicling the more sordid side of the apple’s history to picking the best apples for Tarte Tatin to the colorful truth of Johnny Appleseed. At Serious Eats, I discovered a discussion on the merits and faults of apples. And the Earthbound Kitchen encountering the same problem I had, came up with some solutions of their own.
After coming across so much stuff about apples, I couldn’t help but include a couple of kitchen gadgets to help you with all your apple endeavors:
Oxo Good Grips i-Series Swivel Peeler
KitchenAid Professional Fruit Slicer (I love this thing)
Back To Basics Apple and Potato Peeler (I want this thing)
Decorative Pie Top Cutters (I wouldn’t mind having this either)
So there you have it. You’ve got to be able to find something here to help divert any avalanches of apples you may encounter. I’m thinking apple fritters to start things off. What about you, any other ideas?

Thanks for the comment. Will definitely have to try it out this season. I think I’m going to have to give your recipe here a shot though first. Now all I need is some wheat pastry flour.
